About Me

My photo
I'm Arthur, a Golden Retriever. I was rescued from the streets of Taiwan through the efforts of Golden Retriever Rescue and many kind volunteers in Taiwan. I understand Mandarin and English but cannot speak either. I have the innate ability to smell anything 'round' and I consider myself a real foodie as I'm willing to try just about anything edible. I was adopted by my human in 2009, my human ROCKS; together, we are on a special mission in rounding me into a stellar 'urban dog'! This blog is dedicated to my journey in urban development and the humans who make it possible.

The Luckiest Dogs Are Downtown!

With the recent opening of the East River Dog Park at Pier 11, dogs all over lower Manhattan are licking their lucky-paws! The long awaited and highly anticipated opening of the new dog park has become Arthur's favorite hangout. It's filled with unique and quirky elements beyond the common concrete and link chain fencing. Landscape Architect Ken Smith, has created a one of a kind dog run right here in our neighborhood of FiDi in New York City. A canine Mecca sits right under the FDR sporting a multitude of doggie desires like: a giant concrete bone, an 'Oz-like' towering tree, an over sized grey squirrel, and a sand pit. Agility objects such bridges and run through dog houses. The real crowd-pleaser, (especially rewarding these hot summer days) a manually operated 3-fountain splash pool!

The park gets much attention but only dogs with their dog-owners are allowed inside.  I noticed more than the normal amount of people (many tourists) who stop to observe the dogs and take pictures. The other day, I overheard one woman telling her young daughter, "These are city dogs honey, they don't have lawns they have dog parks," her daughter then replied, "oh, they're lucky dogs."  I have to agree, ‘we’ are.
